Temitope Lawani, a Nigerian national, is co-founder and managing partner of Helios Investment Partners and co-CEO of Helios Fairfax Partners. He has more than 25 years of principal investment experience. Prior to forming Helios, he was a principal in the San Francisco and London offices of TPG Capital. 

Lawani serves on the board of directors of NBA Africa, Pershing Square Holdings, Helios Towers, Thunes, Starsight Energy and ZOLA Electric. He also serves on the MIT board of trustees, the dean’s advisory council for the MIT School of Engineering, the dean’s advisory board for Harvard Law School, and the board of directors of The END Fund, a leader in the global health movement to tackle neglected tropical diseases. 

Lawani earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from MIT, and a law degree and MBA from Harvard.

Patrice Motsepe is a global entrepreneur and philanthropist. He has business interests globally in mining, financial services and banking, renewable energy, technology, telecommunications, real estate, health, farming and agriculture, sports and entertainment. In 2017, Forbes magazine commemorated its 100th anniversary and honored Motsepe as one of the “100 Greatest Living Business Minds” in the world, a list that included Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and other global entrepreneurs. 

In 2013, Motsepe and his wife, Precious Moloi-Motsepe, joined the Giving Pledge which was started by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. The Motsepe family committed to give half of their wealth to the poor. In 2019, Forbes wrote that $500 million was donated by the Motsepe family to the poor and for philanthropic purposes. 

Motsepe is president of Football in Africa (CAF) and vice president of FIFA. The Motsepe family owns Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club, one of the most successful clubs.

Chiney Ogwumike is a two-time WNBA All-Star for the Los Angeles Sparks and a full-time, multi-platform ESPN commentator and NBA analyst. In August 2020 she became the first Black woman to host a national, daily sports-talk radio show, and she recently became a regular on ESPN’s NBA Today and NBA Countdown. The 2021 Forbes 30 under 30 honoree also produced 144, an ESPN Films documentary about the 2020 WNBA season. 

Ogwumike, the first overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft, was the 2014 WNBA Rookie of the Year and currently serves as vice president of the WNBA Players Association. She earned a bachelor’s degree in international relations from Stanford while leading the Cardinal to three Final Fours. Off the court, Ogwumike is passionate about giving back and empowering the next generation. She has made numerous trips to Africa with NBA Africa and other nonprofits to help launch youth engagement initiatives using basketball as a tool for development.

Raj Shah is president of the Rockefeller Foundation, a global institution committed to promoting the well-being of humanity around the world through data, science and innovation. Under his leadership, the foundation raised and deployed more than $1 billion to respond to the COVID pandemic at home and abroad, launched a Pandemic Prevention Initiative to prevent future health crises, and created a $10 billion Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet to help secure a just and green recovery. Shah serves on President Biden’s Defense Policy Board and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Council on Foreign Relations. He is married to Shivam Mallick Shah and they have three children.

When his classmates in Nigeria were playing soccer, Masai Ujiri was watching highlights of Hakeem Olajuwon. His love of basketball brought him to college in the U.S., and when his playing career was complete, his career off-court began.

He started as a scout, traveling the world searching for talent. Ujiri was named general manager of the Denver Nuggets in 2011, becoming the first African GM in pro sports, and won the 2013 NBA Executive of the Year Award. He was named president of the Toronto Raptors in 2013, building the squad that won the 2019 NBA title, the first team outside the U.S. to do so.

Ujiri, who has been named Toronto’s most influential person, remains connected to Africa. He has served as director of the NBA Basketball Without Borders Africa program, and in 2003, he founded Giants of Africa, an organization that uses sport to create opportunities for youth on and off the court.
